General Summary:   

The Education Coordinator manages the education needs of students in a therapeutic setting.  The Education Coordinator assesses, plans and evaluates both the academic and therapeutic needs for students.

 

Essential Job Functions:

·        Completes the intake process or the administrative and initial procedures for admission/acceptance by:  (1) Completing the required documents for admission to the program.  (2) Completing required documents for program eligibility and appropriateness.  (3) Obtain appropriately signed consents when soliciting form or providing information to outside sources to protect the clients' confidentiality and rights. 

·        Assesses each student through the collection of the following data:  pre-treatment assessment, CD evaluation, academic achievement testing, school records, and relevant family history.

·        Actively seeks information needed to assess the student’s educational needs.  Interviews parents, clients and school officials as well as reads chart information to integrate the student educational plan into the master treatment plan. 

·        Participates in the treatment planning process as a member of the treatment team.

·        Uses special education techniques in a psych-educational model to formulate individual education plans.

·        Works with school representative, parents and student to identify goals and objectives necessary for the student to reintegrate into his home school.

·        Uses cognitive-behavioral and academic interventions to achieve educational goals and objectives.

·        Monitors the student’s response and progress of educational goals and objectives and updates plan accordingly in weekly staffing and in treatment plan reviews every 30 days.

·        Conducts classroom education and individualized one on one teaching in the treatment setting.

·        Provides Crisis Intervention for client during acute emotional and/or physical distress by: (1) Recognizing the elements of the client’s crisis. (2) Implementing an immediate course of action appropriate to the crisis.  (3) Enhancing the overall treatment by utilizing crisis events.

·        Completes report and record keeping by: (1) Preparing reports and relevant records integrating available information to facilitate the continuum of care.  (2) Charting pertinent ongoing information pertaining to the client.  (3) Utilizing relevant information from written documents for client care.

·        Consults with other professionals in regard to client’s treatment/services by: (1) Recognizing issues that are beyond your base of knowledge and/or skills.  (2) Consulting with appropriate resources to ensure the provision of effective treatment services.  (3) Adhering to applicable laws, regulations and agency policies governing the disclosure of client identifying data.  (4) Explaining the rationale for the consultation to the client, if appropriate.

·        Works collaboratively with the school representative obtaining approved curriculum and procedures for implementation.

·        Meets with Program Director minimum of twice monthly for supervision and evaluation.

·        Accountable for his/her own professional growth.

·        Collaborates with other members of the treatment and management team to assess, plan, implement and evaluate client care, programming and other community mental health activities.

·        Performs program specific skill competently and independently in accordance with policies and procedures.

·        Maintains professional appearance, behavior and work environment.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

·        Knowledge of and experience utilizing special education techniques in a therapeutic environment;

·        Working knowledge of chemical dependency treatment preferred;

·        Problem solving skills;

·        Organizational skills;

·        Skills in interpersonal relations, verbal and written communication;

·        Skill in data entry and report making;

·        Ability to handle multiple tasks, details with accuracy, and to with a diverse and difficult client group;

·        Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.

 

Education and Experience:

·        Valid Nebraska Teaching Certificate, Special Education Endorsement preferred.

·        Experience working in a therapeutic environment with students dealing with substance abuse and mental health issues.
